When I woke, it was still dark. No light filtered in through the tent and my heart stuttered in my chest as my hand flailed around for something to hold onto. It had been so dark inside that Shadow.
I’d thought I’d never see the light of day again.
Did I make it out?
The soft sound of breath met my ears and I tilted my head to find Caelan’s red hair spread across the pillow beside mine. A body pressed against my other side, and something viny—Kyrion’s tail—wound around my hip.
I made it out. My mates were here, and I made it out.
I blew out another ragged breath and shook my head to clear it, slowly sitting up so I could slip from the bedroll without waking them. Just because I was awake didn’t mean they needed to be.
As I changed my dress, I glanced to the bedroll and noticed a missing body.
Olis.
He’d been doing so much lately. Tialha depended on him in almost the same way she seemed to depend on Reese. But they both needed their rest.
I left the tent to find Olis sitting at the fire, staring out into the night. He looked so stoic, almost like a statue, as he sat there. He was beautiful like this, but I wouldn’t tell him that. I was certain he would react to the word beautiful the same as he did to cute.
Quietly, I made my way to him and took a seat next to The Brute with a sigh, reaching for his hand to break his concentration.
“Couldn’t sleep?” he asked, not yet looking toward me.
“I suppose not,” I murmured.
“Well, it’s alright. Tialha wants everyone to get ready to move anyway.”
“In the dark?”
“In the dark. A scout went ahead to Basid . . .” Olis’ voice cut off, and my own heart raced in my chest as I waited to hear the words that I knew would change everything.
“What happened?”
“There’s no one left,” he whispered, his eyes softening as he delivered the blow. “They found no one. An empty, razed city.”
“King Eldrin?”
“Gone.”
My eyes watered as I imagined the poor Basid King being dragged away by my mother’s soldiers—or worse, dying in his home by their hand.
My fists clenched at my side and I nodded, swallowing all the fear, all the anger, and I turned toward the tent.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“To wake the others. We need to move.”
Olis swallowed hard and nodded before I turned around again, heading toward the tent to rally my mates. We needed to get to Basid.
I needed to get to Basid.
I needed to see with my own eyes what tragedy had befallen the kindest court in Tuatha.
A part of me hoped the scout was wrong, but even I knew that was just leftover naivete.
I just hoped what we found in Basid didn’t break me.
